How Truck VIN Decoding Works

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character alphanumeric code unique to every vehicle built since 1981. It contains encoded information established by NHTSA regulations (49 CFR Part 565):

  • Digits 1–3 (WMI): World Manufacturer Identifier (e.g. 1GT = GM USA Truck, 1FT = Ford USA Truck, 1C6 = Ram USA Truck, 3TY = Toyota Mexico).
  • Digits 4–8 (VDS): Vehicle Descriptor Section (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating class, cab style, brake system, engine type).
  • Digit 9: Security Check Digit (mathematical checksum modulo 11).
  • Digit 10: Model Year code (e.g. P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Digit 11: Assembly Plant code.
  • Digits 12–17 (VIS): Sequential production serial number.
