However, in real-world hauling, a truck will almost always exceed its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and payload capacity long before reaching its maximum towing capacity.
Maximum towing capacity represents the total weight of a trailer the engine, transmission, and cooling systems can pull under controlled flat-track conditions. In contrast, payload capacity is the maximum total weight the truck chassis can physically carry, including passengers, cargo, aftermarket bed accessories, and the downward vertical weight exerted by the trailer tongue.
To prevent dangerous high-speed trailer sway, federal towing safety guidelines mandate that 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight must rest directly on the hitch ball. On an 8,000-pound travel trailer, that translates to 800 to 1,200 pounds of downward tongue weight resting on the rear suspension.
